Welcome to the GNSS & Geodesy Workshop!
Explore the intricacies of geodesy and GNSS technology with our comprehensive workshop designed to equip participants with foundational knowledge and practical skills. This workshop is perfect for professionals and students aiming to deepen their understanding of geodetic principles and GNSS applications.
What to Expect:
Foundation in Geodesy: Grasp fundamental geodetic concepts and their applications.
Coordinate Systems and Transformations: Understand different coordinate systems, their transformations, and practical usage.
GNSS Technology: Gain practical knowledge of GNSS measurements, error sources, and best practices in GNSS surveying.
Modernization and Future Trends: Stay updated on the latest developments in NSRS modernization and future trends in GNSS technology.
Curriculum:
Day 1: Geodesy
- Introduction to Geodesy: Understanding the definition and importance of geodesy in positioning and spatial coordinates.
- Reference Frames: Overview of NAD 83(2011), ITRF, NATRF2022, and the difference between “plate fixed” and constant frames.
- Coordinates and Projections: Discussion on geodetic, geocentric, and map projections such as SPCS and UTM, including distortions in projections.
- Heights: Examination of geopotential datums, geoid models, and the differences between ellipsoidal, orthometric, and tidal datum heights.
- Transformations: Learning about 1D, 2D, 3D, and 3D+time transformations, including practical tools like VDatum, NCAT, and open-source tools like PROJ.
- NSRS Modernization: Insights into NATRF2022 and NAPGD2022 and their role in geodesy.
Day 2: GNSS
- How GNSS Works: A review of GNSS technologies, the connection between geodesy and GNSS, and the evolution of the GNSS environment.
- Measurements and Errors: Understanding code and carrier phase measurements and formats, multi-frequency, multi-constellation GNSS, and common receiver errors.
- Performance and Best Practices: Guidelines on using OPUS, RTK, RTNs, and understanding the interpretation and QC of OPUS reports.
- Future of GNSS: Exploring static, kinematic, and real-time PPP, their performance, and recent advancements.
- Practical Application: Hands-on session on various GNSS survey methods, field procedures, and processing/adjustment approaches.
Logistics:
Refreshments: Coffee and snacks will be provided to keep you energized and focused throughout the workshop.
Meals: A light breakfast of fruit and pastries will be provided followed by a buffet style lunch on both days of this workshop.
Parking Guidance: It is best to park on campus, City of Corvallis street parking is heavily monitored.
- Daily parking passes can either be bought online or via one of the many parking pay stations on campus.
- See OSU’s Visitor Parking for parking maps, information, and to purchase a visitor permit.
WORKSHOP SPEAKER(S):
Chase Simpson & Dr. Brian Weaver
Chase Simpson, PLS is a Senior Instructor of Geomatics and Faculty Research Assistant in the School of Civil and Construction Engineering at Oregon State University (OSU). He instructs a large number of surveying courses including Surveying Theory, Control Surveying, and Oregon Land Survey Law. His research interests are unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) based lidar and photogrammetry, the use of GNSS for control applications, system integration and sensor characterization. More recently his research has been focused on developing methods of aligning real-time GNSS networks (RTNs) to the National Spatial Reference System to increase user confidence and consistency between adjacent RTNs. Prior to becoming an instructor, Chase received a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering and a Master of Science in Civil Engineering with an emphasis in Geomatics from OSU.
Dr. Brian Weaver is an Assistant Professor (Senior Research) of Geomatics in the school of Civil and Construction Engineering at Oregon State University. He received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Civil Engineering with an emphasis in Geomatics at Oregon State University, and Ph.D. degree in Civil Engineering with an emphasis on GNSS-based geodesy at the University of Nottingham. His research expertise includes development of satellite radar altimetry and GNSS data processing algorithms for high-accuracy applications and alignment of geodetic data to the national reference frame. Dr. Weaver has developed new techniques to enhance GNSS position accuracy and altimetry- based sea level estimation in challenging environments. His research outcomes have contributed toward new features in NOAA tools (i.e., OPUS and VDatum) that are used to align a variety of data sets to the national reference frame. He also gained experience working as a Civil Engineering and Surveying intern in both the public and private sectors, with projects focused on structural analysis/design, water/wastewater systems, roadway design, and paving. During his time at Oregon State University, and while employed as a Quality Assurance Technician at Trimble Geomatics, Dr. Weaver conducted surveys using a variety of instruments and technologies: analogue/digital levels, total stations, GNSS receivers, UAS, and lidar.
